Q: Let’s start with a fun icebreaker: If your art could be turned into a theme park ride, what would it look like and what would it be called?
A: Fun! Okay, if my art was turned into a theme park ride, it would look similar to “Soaring Over Cali-fornia” at Disneyland. Don’t worry, I’m not a Disney adult. But, the peacefulness is something that would have to be maintained. I’d build possibly the most relaxing rollercoaster you can imagine. It would be called “Almost Nothing”
Q: Your works carry a raw quality, almost as if the viewer is included in the piece, experiencing an intimate moment alone with the subject. Can you share how this dynamic came about?
A: Thank you! I feel like intimacy is a space I thrive in. Not that I don’t enjoy a good party, but it’s the quiet, moments that allow us to truly connect. It’s how we build relationships, bond, and find a sense of security with people. It’s a side of the world I’ve always felt comfortable in. Painting figures in intimate moments is my way of inserting myself into more of that.

Q: One of the standout qualities of your work is how effortlessly you blend texture with emotion. What inspired you to place such emphasis on these elements?
A: Glad it appears effortless, haha. Sometimes it’s very laborious. Body language and expression are so nuanced; we can draft such a narrative from an image where very little is happening because of how we read into that body language. The application of the paint is me doubling down on whatever that narrative is.
Q: What role does silence or stillness play in your work?
A: Silence and stillness play such a significant role in my daily life, and looking back on the work, it’s clearly reflected. It’s not unusual for me to paint in silence, or even drive in silence. It’s important that if the paintings are going to have a calmness to them, they need to be made in that spirit. But that’s the life I’m trying to live. So once again, I’m sort of inserting the life I’d like to live into my paintings.

Q: How do you capture the stillness and intimacy of a moment without making it feel static?
A: I really just keep painting until the work has the correct contrast of definition and looseness. Balance is such an important word here.
Q: What challenges do you face when painting moments that seem so simple but hold deep meaning?
A: Painting is ridden with challenges the second you pick up the brush. It’s constant problem solving and damage control. I suppose that’s because I know what I’m trying to do and I’ll just keep pushing it until it does what I need. One of the struggles I face is where to place each element of the painting on the spectrum of too loose to over-painted.
Q: As we wrap up, what’s next for Austin Hayman?
A: This spring, I’ll be contributing several pieces to a group show called “Rise 2” by Allgorithim in Los Angeles. Beyond that, really just keeping my head down and painting a lot. That’s what it’s all about!
